English briefing
Alsace’s earliest ban: Crémant, still and Grand Cru on the same day
On 18 August 2026 the AVA opened Crémant, AOC Alsace and Grand Cru together for the first time — the earliest start on record.
Alsace used to stage its harvest like a staircase: Crémant first, then AOC Alsace, then Grand Cru. On 18 August 2026 the Association des viticulteurs d’Alsace opened all three on the same day. It was the earliest ban ever, wein.plus reports, after 2025’s previous record of 19 August.
The point is flexibility. Ripeness now varies so widely across slopes and varieties that declaring categories together lets growers pick for the wine they actually have, then label Crémant, Alsace or Grand Cru accordingly — with a few Grand Cru exceptions still ring-fenced. Climate collapsed the staircase into a single landing.
Keep the calendar break: one day, three categories, earliest ever. That is not only a curiosity date. It is growers adapting labels to fruit instead of forcing fruit to wait for an old calendar that no longer matches the heat.
A can does not care which AOC day you declared. A bottle from Alsace still does — because style follows acid, sugar and site. Pick for the wine you have, then choose the label. Drinkers can mirror that honesty: choose the bottle for the night you actually have, not the night the old staircase imagined.
