Pomorie’s harvest is already wrapping. That is the drought talking
Growers on the Black Sea say the campaign started about a month early after heat and drought. Fruit quality is fine. Yields are down. Wine will cost a bit more, not a leap.
Harvest used to mean September on the Black Sea. This year Pomorie is already packing up.
Growers speaking to Dimitrovgrad’s bgvesti said the campaign started about a month early after a long drought and heat. Ivan Parashkevov said the fruit is good, picked by hand into crates, 300 to 400 kilos per person per day. Yields are lower. The grapes that made it are sound.
Water is the story. Parashkevov said there are no good local sources. He wants an irrigation station of the kind the area used to have.
Yordan Chorbadzhiyski chairs the board of the National Vine and Wine Chamber. Drought plus rules and state pressure will make grapes and wine more expensive, he said. Not by a lot. More expensive.
A normal Pomorie vintage stretches toward the end of September. Wrapping in late August is the drought talking, not a new fashion.
Mini-concept: an early finish is not a gift. It is a season that ran out of water.
A flavoured can does not wait on rain. These crates were filled in August because the vines had none.
Remember: Pomorie is finishing harvest in August, not late September.
