Catalonia’s 126.8 million kg is a running total, not the harvest

Catalan cellars have already taken in 126.8 million kg of grapes — 63% more than on the same dates last year, and 37.3% of the whole 2025 crop. Agriculture still says it is too early to name a final volume.

A year-to-date kilo count is a speedometer. It is not the finish line.

VIA Empresa reports figures from Catalonia’s agriculture department, drawn from the Registre Vitivinícola de Catalunya and the Sistema de Seguiment de la Verema. By this week, cellars had booked 126.8 million kg of grapes. On the same dates in 2025 the figure was 77.7 million kg. That is 63% more this year — and already 37.3% of last year’s entire campaign.

Every appellation has started. The first intake was 21 July: chardonnay in DO Penedès. Macabeo and xarel·lo have come in especially early. Macabeo alone is 53.6 million kg, about 67% of its whole 2025 crop. Xarel·lo has reached 30.6 million kg. Then chardonnay 16.6 million, pinot noir 4.94 million, garnatxa blanca 4.8 million, ull de llebre 2.1 million.

The map is uneven. DO Penedès and DO Cava together already hold more than 102 million kg. DO Catalunya has 12.4 million. Terra Alta is around 750,000 kg. Later zones such as Priorat and Pla de Bages are still in the first phase.

Vines are generally healthy. The main watch is oidium, which has needed extra attention. Medium- and late-ripening fruit is still coming in, so the department says it is too soon to call a final volume.

Mini-concept: an intake-to-date number measures pace, not the vintage. Treat 126.8 million kg as already in, not as the harvest.

A flavoured can has no vintage clock. These kilos are macabeo and xarel·lo arriving weeks early under Mediterranean heat.

Remember: 126.8 million kg already in, +63% vs last year to date — not the final harvest.
