Argentina’s world wine export share slips to 2.1%
IERAL–Fundación Mediterránea (Gustavo Reyes & Jorge Day) tracks Argentina from a 4.7% world export peak in 2008 to 2.1% in 2025. Mendoza packaged varietal volume is −36% vs 2010 with real prices −7%, as global consumption falls 15% and share erodes in the US and Brazil.
A smaller world glass is one problem. Losing your slice of that glass is another.
TN Campo cites an IERAL–Fundación Mediterránea report by Gustavo Reyes and Jorge Day: Argentina’s share of world wine exports fell from a 4.7% peak in 2008 to 2.1% in 2025. Mendoza exported 36% less packaged varietal wine by volume than in 2010, while the real price received was 7% lower. Global wine consumption dropped about 15% between 2017 and 2025 — a shrinking pie — yet Argentina also lost share inside that pie.
Mini-concept: FX is not a full alibi. The authors note the dollar level “does not explain everything”: Argentina lost ground both in the contracting US market and in growing Brazil. Internal costs, logistics, commercial strategy and shifting taste all sit on the scoreboard beside the exchange rate.
First-half 2026 already showed “less volume and lower price.” For drinkers abroad, that reads as fewer Argentine bottles competing for the intentional pour — Malbec and friends fighting whisky highballs and RTDs on price and presence.
Remember: 4.7% (2008) → 2.1% (2025) world export share; Mendoza packaged varietals −36% vol / −7% real price vs 2010; FX alone ≠ the story.
