Trend headlines love one consumer. Shelves are built from many.
Master of Wine Konstantin Baum, speaking with Wine Meridian, sketches Germany as segments instead of one lifestyle wave. Lighter, lower-alcohol wine is real. It is also still a niche — roughly 2–4% of the market, not the mass-market tide. What most shoppers still chase is affordable softness. Price remains the first filter. Familiar crowd-pleasers such as Primitivo keep their pull. Medals sway the average buyer more than lifestyle buzzwords on a label.
That does not make lighter wine fake. It makes the maths honest. A stylish niche can grow and still fail to rewrite the aisle. Brands that confuse Instagram energy with German shopping habits will overbuild for a slice that is still small.
Mini-concept: segment, don’t flatten. Treat the shelf as groups with different jobs. Some nights want lower alcohol and a clear head. Many nights still want a soft, known red that beats a random can on price and comfort. Intentional wine wins when it matches the night — not when it pretends every drinker joined one trend.
Keep one number. 2–4%. That is enough to take seriously, and too small to call the whole market.
