Corsin at Milleranche: wait for rain, then race the skins
Jérôme Corsin tells Vitisphere his northern Beaujolais estate will pick late in the week, hoping rain helps Gamay skins while potential alcohol already runs high. Hail risk sits behind every delay.
Maturity is not one number on a refractometer. It is a daily argument between sugar, seeds and skins.
Vitisphere interviews Jérôme Corsin, president of the Beaujolais crus ODG and grower at Domaine de la Milleranche in Jullié. After heat stress more than pure drought, he planned to start late in the week, welcoming forecast rain yet doubting it would let him wait long on Gamay skins. Last year was the smallest Beaujolais crop he remembered; hail made him fear another record low.
Mini-concept: potential alcohol can race ahead of phenolic ripeness. Seeds and skins may still taste green while juice already reads 13–14°. Growers then choose: pick for freshness, wait for texture, or split parcels. That dilemma is the human face of a hot vintage.
Choice for drinkers: a thoughtful Gamay cru is an intentional red — lighter than a bombastic can, denser with place. Corsin’s clipboard is why the bottle tastes decided, not accidental.
Pattern: high degrees, unready skins, hope for rain. One grower’s week is the vintage in miniature. The season keeps teaching that calendar memory and vineyard reality now diverge.
