Aszú took the camp crown. Dry Furmint still won its own room.
Tokaj Land’s report on the first Writers’ Camp competition notes Sauska Winery’s 2021 Birsalmás Furmint led the dry white Tokaj category with 90 points. That matters for drinkers who only know Tokaj as liquid dessert. Dry Furmint — especially single-vineyard names like Birsalmás — is the food wine of the region: taut acidity, orchard fruit, a finish that asks for supper, not only pastry.
Mini-concept: a wine region can own two jobs. Sweet Aszú is concentration and time. Dry Furmint is precision and appetite. Category medals teach shoppers to ask which job they are buying tonight instead of treating “Tokaj” as one syrupy word.
Choose dry Tokaj when you want intentional white with a map, not a flavoured sparkling can. Ninety points in a literature-tied contest is a reminder that seriousness in Tokaj is not reserved for noble rot alone.
Keep the split: Sauska Birsalmás Furmint 90 pts dry; Grand Tokaj Aszú for the sweet title. Two Tokajs, two occasions, one hillside language.
Keep the pattern: a place, a number, and a reason to open the bottle.
