MASAF table: Italy crop −6–8%, Sicily asks €25m crisis distillation, label pictogram coming

First 2026/27 estimates at MASAF point to a national wine crop down 6–8%: Sicily about −30% (~1.8m hl), Veneto −10%, Puglia +10% (~9m hl). Sicily lodged a €25m crisis-distillation ask for ~400,000 hl; draft EU labels would add a pictogram beside the QR from about December 2026.

Italy’s first harvest read is uneven. The political table is already full.

On 16 September at MASAF, Confagricoltura sat with the ministry on the 2026/27 vintage. Provisional national estimates sit −6% to −8%. Sicily is the sharp edge — about −30%, near 1.8 million hectolitres — while Veneto is marked −10%. Puglia alone among the big regions is up, about +10% toward 9 million hl. A firmer ISMEA picture is due by month-end.

Sicily has filed a crisis-distillation request with a technical dossier: roughly €25 million aimed at about 400,000 hl. Farm groups say they will weigh targeted crisis tools — distillation or vine removal — only where the case is local and funded outside the wine CMO, and they remain open to tighter planting authorisations and yields.

Labelling is the other clock. A draft change to Regulation (EU) 2019/33 would put a pictogram beside the existing QR that carries nutrition and ingredients. Entry into force is sketched after publication, indicative December 2026; stock labelled before that date can sell through without a sticker redo.

Mini-concept: crisis distillation is a pressure valve, not a vintage plan. It turns surplus litres into spirit so tanks and prices can breathe — useful only when the map of pain is honest.

Keep: when an Italian bottle from 2026 tastes scarce or soft, ask whether your region was Sicily’s −30% — or Puglia’s +10%.

Remember: Italy −6–8%; Sicily −30% (~1.8m hl), Veneto −10%, Puglia +10% (~9m hl); Sicily ask €25m / ~400k hl; pictogram+QR ~Dec 2026.
