At boutique Trentodoc estate Maso Martis, winemaker Matteo Ferrari told WineNews budbreak ran about ten days earlier than 2025, with flowering finishing in late May. That first pointed to a start near August 10. Then June and July drought and heat slowed the vines: less photosynthesis, slower sugar build, delayed ripening. Recent cooler temperature swings let the cycle restart. Véraison — the color-change moment — began roughly July 20–25. Harvest is now expected around August 18, with excellent quality hoped for after a hard-to-read season.
Mini-lesson: vines can hit a heat brake. When leaves close stomata to save water, sugar accumulation pauses even if the spring calendar felt “early.” Cooler nights and mild swings can restart ripening. Timing is not a straight line from warm March to early pick.
For drinkers of mountain sparkling bases, this matters a lot. Freshness depends on catching fruit after the pause, not after a panic sugar spike that kills the vertical, zippy style Trentodoc is known for.
Pattern: early forecast, drought pause, cooler restart, mid-August pick. Climate is a zigzag, not a ramp.
