Headlines love a “young people quit wine” panic. Italy’s own numbers push back.
Meininger’s International reports UIV–Vinitaly research putting Italian wine drinkers near 30 million. Inside that pool, the 18–24 cohort’s share rose about eight points — from 39% to 47%. Millennials eased off. Gen Z did not vanish. They stepped in with a different calendar: fewer automatic weeknights, more intentional pours.
Mini-concept: market share inside an age band is not the same as total litres. A generation can drink less often and still matter more to the future if they keep choosing wine when they do drink. Volume and loyalty are different graphs.
That is why the industry pins hope on Gen Z menus, tastings and red bottles with a story. Ready-to-drink cans win the no-plan evening. Wine wins when taste, friends or a place make the bottle feel worth opening. Italy’s data says that fight is still open.
Keep the number: roughly 30 million drinkers, and the youngest adult band up eight points. Wine did not lose the young overnight — it has to earn each occasion.
If you take one thing from this story, make it this: wine wins when the night has a reason. A clear number and a clear place turn a headline into a choice you can remember.
