Prestige on the bottle means little if the vine cannot pay.
Vinetur reports Francisco Martínez, president of Requena’s Cava growers, speaking on Monday 24 August. He says DO Cava cannot live with its back to the grower while the sector talks bottle price, image and export. About 30 céntimos per kilo is the figure he cites for conventional Cava-qualified grapes — only about 15 céntimos more than fruit with no origin control.
The swing was fast. In a more stable stretch, around 250 million bottles sold and every grape found a Cava home. Drought then made fruit scarce. Now, he says, large groups are pushing sparkling wines that are not Cava, sometimes under historic Cava brands. In two years the buyer of grapes has more choice — and more power.
Mini-concept: a denomination is a shared name. If the extra cents for certified fruit vanish, the name is doing brand work, not farm work.
A random can does not need a grower floor. A Cava bottle does. Martínez’s line is plain: “No puede existir Cava sin viticultores.” There is no Cava without growers.
Hold the pattern: 30 céntimos a kilo cannot carry a prestige story by itself.
