Planas and CECRV aim Spanish DO wines at Mercosur, India and Indonesia

Spain’s DO councils (CECRV) met minister Luis Planas to push structured Spain Food Nation promo into markets opened by EU deals with Mercosur, India and Indonesia. Regulators spent ~€41m on promo in three years (€15m own / rest EU) and want simpler aid paperwork plus a ring-fenced wine budget in PAC 2028–2034.

Spanish denominación wines want new doors, not only old shelves.

CECRV — the conference of Spanish wine DO councils — sat with agriculture minister Luis Planas to argue that fresh EU trade pacts with Mercosur, India and Indonesia need a coordinated, multi-year push under Spain Food Nation. Planas called the openings “great potential” if the sector acts together and stays the course.

Money already moved: in the last three years DO councils ran public-backed promo of about €41 million, of which they put in roughly €15 million and the European Commission the rest. CECRV says the envelope could be larger if applications and justifications were simpler. Exports today are about €3 billion — Planas says there is “ample room” to lift that figure.

On policy, the councils want PAC 2028–2034 to keep the Wine Package tools, guarantee continuity of the sectoral wine intervention, and give it its own budget line. They also defend a rules-based, reciprocal trade order without tariff traps for cellars that already meet clear standards.

Mini-concept: a trade deal is a unlocked gate, not a full truck. DO promo turns legal access into shelf space — only if the paperwork and the budget outlast one campaign year.

Keep: when a Spanish DO bottle shows up in a new capital, ask whether Mercosur, India or Indonesia was the gate — and whether Spain Food Nation paid for the map.

Remember: CECRV + Planas; ~€41m promo / 3y (€15m own); Spain Food Nation multi-year; PAC 2028–34 wine intervention; exports ~€3bn with room to grow.
