Young Chinese sellers pitch Ningxia mid-premium in Tokyo

China Drinks founder Yuan, 31, and Bordeaux-trained Zhang of Xige are selling Helan Mountain wine into Japanese trade. The pitch is mid-premium Chinese estate bottles — not bulk, not mystery brands.

Tokyo’s wine lists still lean France, Italy and Chile. A new sales desk is trying to add Ningxia.

Tokyo Shimbun coverage in 2026 follows China Drinks founder Yuan, age 31, working alongside Bordeaux-trained Zhang from Xige Estate. Their brief is clear: place mid-premium Helan Mountain wines with Japanese importers, restaurants and curious shops. That matters because Chinese wine abroad often arrives as a headline, then disappears. A mid-premium lane means real price, real tasting notes, and a story about altitude, dry air and Cabernet-led blends from Ningxia — not a souvenir bottle.

Mini-lesson: mid-premium is the hardest shelf. Cheap wine wins on discount. Icon wine wins on fame. Mid-premium must earn a second order with consistency and a clean origin story. Yuan and Zhang are selling that middle: good enough to pour by the glass, specific enough to remember.

For Gen Z drinkers in Tokyo, the choice is not “China versus Europe.” It is intentional discovery versus another safe Pinot Grigio. Trying a Ningxia pour is a small adventure with a named estate behind it.

Pattern: young sellers, mid-premium Helan, Tokyo trade. Origin needs a face and a fair price band.
